Dr Deon Cotterrell is an education-focused lecturer and course convenor in the School of Computing, Mathematics and Engineering at Charles Sturt University. He brings more than 15 years of higher-education experience spanning undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, curriculum development, course coordination, assessment, academic quality assurance and student support. Before joining Charles Sturt University, he served as a lecturer, course coordinator and tutor coordinator at the University of Johannesburg.

His academic interests span artificial intelligence, software engineering, systems programming, cybersecurity and educational technology. His PhD and MSc research developed and evaluated symbiotic software-agent architectures, including cloud-supported game agents and adaptable communication and control models. He is committed to practical, inclusive teaching that connects individual concepts to subject outcomes and their application in industry.

Research

Dr Cotterrell's research interests include artificial intelligence, intelligent and symbiotic agents, agent communication and control, cloud-supported agents, game-agent architectures, procedural environments and applied software systems.

His MSc, completed cum laude, investigated a symbiotic game agent in the cloud, including navigation, decision-making and perception. His PhD extended the symbiotic-agent model through communication and complex control membrane architectures. Five agent models were developed, with the final model implemented as a proof of concept in a procedurally generated game environment. His research record includes two peer-reviewed conference papers.
