Stephan served in the NSW Police Force, spanning a career of 20 years. He worked in areas such as General Duties, Highway Patrol, Rescue Squad, Patrol Support Group (PSG) and VIP Inner City Motorcyclist in all Sydney City Stations including Kings Cross, Darlinghurst, Redfern and Central. Stephan retired as a Sergeant and Station Controller at Surry Hill Police Centre.
After leaving the force Stephan worked extensively developing and implementing Local Government Crime Prevention and Road Safety initiatives in partnership with Roads and Maritime Services and the Attorney General Department.
Stephan then moved onto investigating abuse of children within foster care, and disability and detention centres, reporting the findings to the NSW Ombudsman.
In the 2 years prior to lecturing at the NSW Police Academy, Stephan held the position of Inspector with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Authority, investigating the illegal activities of persons assuming the title of Medical Practitioner.
Stephan has always been interested in Policing education having tutored for the past 6 years on the Bachelor of Policing Degree at Western Sydney University. He was a guest lecturer for University of Western Sydney in the Maldives educating Police officers, Customs and Corrections in an intensive 12 week course in Criminology.
