Mark studied economics at Macquarie University but has a background in print journalism. After graduating in 1986, he spent 20 years working for a range of newspapers and magazines, during which time he won the Henry Lawson Journalism Award (1999) and was Highly Commended in the Sir Harry Budd Memorial Award for NSW Country Journalism (2000-2001).
He is a professional member of the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd.) and is also a published author, having written Three Steel Teeth: Wide Comb Shears and Woolshed Wars. Published by Ginninderra Press, this book is the first detailed account of the wide comb shearing dispute of the early 1980s—one of Australia’s most bitter, protracted and violent industrial disputes.
