MSc Policing, Policy and Leadership, Doctorate in Criminal Justice Profile Julian has held senior leadership roles with both the University of Portsmouth and the University of Cumbria. Julian started his academic career with the University of Cumbria, developing one of the first, in the UK, pre-join degrees for students looking to join the police. Julian worked nationally with the ‘College of Policing’ for England and Wales and became the first Director of the Centre of Excellence for Policing at the University. Julian’s Professional Doctorate researching ‘Initial Police Education and Professionalisation of the Police’, led to a 5-year position at University of Portsmouth as Director of Professional Education Programmes and strategic lead for partnerships with Surrey & Sussex Police and Hampshire Constabulary. These partnerships delivered Graduate level initial education to new police recruits. Alongside this Julian was the strategic lead for a contract with the Ministry of Justice delivering the Professional Qualification in Probation to newly recruited Probation Officers. Prior to entering Higher Education, Julian spent 17 years as a serving police officer, holding many roles including response and roads policing officer alongside being an Authorised Firearms Officer.
