Brett is a lecturer with Charles Sturt University at the School of Policing Studies, currently teaching on the Associate Degree in Policing Practice. Brett was a serving member of the NSW Police Force for 34 years, working in various roles. He completed the last seven years of service working in Education, three of those spent at the NSW Police Academy.

Brett has a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management and a Graduate Certificate in Business Administration. He has also conducted a program called "Take the Lead", teaching leadership skills to junior police officers and public servants.
