Profile

Mick Calatzis is a Detective Superintendent in the Australian Federal Police with over forty years operational experience (and currently on leave from the AFP). Having commenced as a Constable in ACT Police he is a designated Detective, and a police negotiator. Mick completed every rank in ACT Police and the broader AFP. He was ACT COVID Taskforce Commander and led many critical incidents in the ACT and nationally. These include national bushfire emergencies, national protests, and other contingencies. Until recently, Mick led North Canberra police district (twice) being the largest Superintendent command in the ACT. As Superintendent, Judicial and Family Violence Operations, was a member of the ACT Sentence Administration Board.

He worked in Sydney with the POLARIS Waterfront Organised Crime Taskforce, Royal Commission into Trade Union Corruption and as Airport Police Commander. As ACT Crime Manager led the lowest reduction of volume crime in any Australian jurisdiction and commended with a Commissioner’s Conspicuous Conduct Medal. He has been Commander of AFP South Australia and on a separate term for the Northern Territory. He was also part of a joint Taskforce into significant corruption into the Western Australia Police Force in that state.

Mick was the OIC of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Police and Territory Controller during Cyclone Allison. He was AFP Operational Commander for the Christchurch Earthquake in New Zealand and with other Australian police during this tragic event. He has served with the United Nations Police in Mozambique and later in Timor Leste. He was the Police Forward Commander for the riots and arson at the Immigration Detention Centre in Christmas Island. Mick is highly decorated and recently awarded a Commissioners Certificate for Bravery, with other police for rescuing a person from a burning premises.

He is a recipient of the Cross of Saint Andrew, the highest award given to a Greek Australian. Mick holds qualifications that include a Master of Investigations Management and a Master of Business Administration and completing a law degree. Mick also speaks Greek and Spanish. He’s been guest lecturer for Police and Lawyers session with Australian National University and for the Master of Law (Prosecutions) program for Managing a Major Investigation with University of Wollongong. He has published professional articles on the police profession and managing risk. Mick enjoys travel, swimming for fitness and spending time with his family.
