Dr. Geberew Tulu Mekonnen is a Lecturer at the Centre for Law and Justice, Faculty of Business, Justice and Behavioural Sciences, Charles Sturt University (CSU). Holding a PhD from the University of Tasmania (UTAS, 2020), his research explores higher education governance, policy, and its intersections with criminology, including cybercrime prevention, deepfakes, financial crime, role of education in misinformation and disinformation, cybercrime and technology-driven justice solutions, and youth crime. He has also a good scholarly record with a strong focus on higher education governance, criminology-adjacent topics, successful grant applications, peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations.

Dr Mekonnen's career spans teaching, research, and leadership. Before joining CSU, he held different roles at UTAS as Sessional Academic Staff, Research Assistant, Research Outputs Officer, and Research Funding Officer. In Ethiopia, at Addis Ababa University, he served as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, College Managing Director, and Program Coordinator. Currently, he is a member of CSU's Academic Senate.

Teaching

Delivered different courses such as operational policing practice, and law, policy, and procedures, action research, research methods.

Currently, I am designing curricula in collaboration with my colleagues for Introduction to Criminology and Investigating Criminology.

  • Criminology and education (policing education, justice systems, criminogenic learning).
  • Cybercrime, cybercrime prevention (misinformation, disinformation, deepfakes, cryptocurrencies).
  • Youth crime and community safety.
  • Financial crime, money laundering, organised financial crime.
  • Migrant/refugee mentoring.
  • Pedagogy, classroom assessment, and curriculum innovation.
  • Higher education governance, policy, and leadership.

Current projects

A co-investigator:

  • Evaluation of the NSW Hospitals Body Worn Camera Trial (AU$60,000),
  • Evaluation of Pacific Faculty Leadership Programs (AU$31,720),
  • Combating Cybercrime in Australia (AU$10,000).

A Chief Investigator:

  • A recently submitted grant application to Innovation for Poverty Action, Mobile App Intervention to Reduce Women’s Fraud Risks in Digital Financial Services (AU$517,445.30).
