About us

Imaging and Sensing Research Group

About us

Imaging and Sensing (IS) is one of the core research areas within the Data Science and Engineering Research Unit (DSERU) at Charles Sturt. Our research focuses on designing, modeling, developing, and applying image processing, computer vision, computational intelligence, and machine learning techniques, as well as wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IoT) to address real-world challenges.

We apply our expertise across multiple domains, including agriculture, viticulture, environmental science, and law enforcement, driving innovation through advanced technological solutions. The IS research group brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts in:

  • Artificial intelligence and image processing
  • Information systems, mathematical and statistical modelling
  • Agriculture and environment science

Our objectives

We're dedicated to shaping the future of smart sensing and data-driven solutions for global challenges. Our key objectives are to:

  • conduct cutting-edge research in imaging, sensing, wireless communication, and data analytics by fostering a multidisciplinary collaborative environment.
  • develop innovative technologies with applications in precision agriculture, winery science, environmental science, law enforcement, and regional community development.
  • strengthen academic and industry partnerships to drive impactful, applied research outcomes and translate innovations into practice.
  • provide high-quality training and supervision to research students (PhD, DIT, Honours), while embedding advanced concepts in wireless communication, sensing, and data-driven technologies into undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Our industry partners

We collaborate and work closely with academics, researchers and industry partners from NSW Department of Primary Industry (DPI)Gulbali Institute, Agripark, and international law enforcement agencies.
